Lyceum Submission Guidelines & Form

Our online submission form now allows for both writing and art submissions!
If you have any problems with this form or questions about the submission process,
please e-mail us at lyceum.umd@gmail.com.

Before you start the submission process, please make sure all your pieces have titles. This does not include "Untitled 1," Untitled 2," et cetera. Please take the time to choose a unique title.
Make sure your document titles are the titles of your pieces, in order to reduce the risk of errors.

Writing Guidelines

1. We accept almost any type of writing. Nonfiction, fiction, poetry, prose, and essay formats are accepted. Writing does not have to be censored (moderate use of mature concepts/language is not a problem), but all writing should be edited and complete.
2. Length: There is no minimum or maximum word count for submissions. Please note, however, that preference may be given to pieces that are more moderate in length in order to encourage author variety in the issue, depending on the submissions received.
3. Quantity: For long pieces, please limit your writing to FIVE submissions. For shorter pieces, you may submit up to TEN.
4. We would strongly prefer that your pieces be sent via our online submission form. This minimizes errors and makes sure your piece is shown in its original form.

Art Guidelines

1. Lyceum believes art has no limits, and therefore any media type is encouraged and accepted. However, you must state your media type at the time of submission. We usually receive paintings, photos, drawings, and collages, but we are also open to the 3D arts. Please contact us if you have any questions about submmitting a medium or format.
2. If you want to submit traditional artwork, please scan or photograph the piece(s). Submitted images MUST be at least 300 DPI in resolution. Anything of a lesser quality may not be accepted or may not reproduce well. If you cannot produce a high-quality digital copy, please bring your piece(s) to our office, 2115 UC, and we will work to get the image we need.
3. Size: We do not have an official size limit. If your work is exceedingly large, we will decide on a case by case basis. On the other end of the scale, your work must be large enough to put into print. This is especially true with digital photos. Please make sure you send us images that are at least 4x4 inches or about 400x400 pixels. Anything smaller may not be accepted because we will not be able to reproduce it.
4. Quantity: Please limit your art submissions to TEN pieces.
5. Your piece may be selected for our cover, in which case we will contact you.

Terms and Agreements (The Legal Stuff)

When you submit your writing or art to Lyceum, you accept the following terms:

1. We do not accept anonymous submissions.
2. Lyceum has the right to format your piece accordingly in order to make it suitable for publication. This will never include editing work to detract from its original form! For artwork, it may include subtle re-sizing or orientation changes, and for writing it may include changing font size, page length, spelling, et cetera.
3. Lyceum has the right to edit minor grammatical errors in writing pieces. We understand that often writers use an artistic license with grammar or punctuation, and we only edit those mistakes that are obviously unintentional to ensure a standard of academic excellence in our journal. In cases of uncertainty, we will check with you first first before changing your piece.
4. After publication, Lyceum may use your piece(s) again. If it is for publication, we will ask you. Other times, it may be as part of a Lyceum bulletin board, poster, or website, which will NEVER be used for profit, only for promotion of Lyceum. If you are against us using your piece in the future, please let us know during the time of submission.
5. If your work is published, you retain the rights to your artistic and intellectual property. You may submit your works elsewhere, sell the original, et cetera.

Agreement *
By checking this box, you agree to all of our terms and conditions listed above. Failure to follow our guidelines may result in your work not being considered for our journal.
