RSCM St. Louis Course Adult Participant and Staff Guidelines
The St. Louis Course is somewhat unique in the RSCM America Training Courses as it's character is one which promotes a strong community spirit and a joyous, camp-like atmosphere. The Course is housed for the week at an Episcopal Retreat and Conference Center in Columbia, Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, and provides a beautiful nature filled surrounding for the Course which includes a Labyrinth garden and hiking trails.
Following are some guidelines that the governing Committee of the St. Louis Course has compiled over the years that will assist you in taking full advantage of the whole experience.
•All Staff and Adult Participants should be present and on time for community activities: Rehearsals, Daily Evensong, and Meals.
•We ask that Adult Participants not absent themselves off-site more than twice from Lunch or Dinner community meals. These are very important community building times where the adults are not only able to visit while sharing a meal together, but also serve as a key example to the choristers of community spirit.
•It is expected by the Committee of the St. Louis Course that the Music Director, Course Organist, and Housemaster(s) will not absent themselves and take their meals off-site but rather be present for both the choristers and adult participants and engaged with the community. (exception: those times when the organist must be off-site for practice at the venues)
•Each evening there is a gathering for adults only where "adult beverages" and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks may be enjoyed in a casual, party-like atmosphere away from the children and teens. Each adult who wishes to drink (responsibly) alcoholic beverages should be prepared to provide the beverage of their choice and be willing to share as well. These gatherings are wonderful opportunities to get to know each other and for music professionals to share their experiences in their churches with each other.
•Though alcoholic beverages are allowed in the evenings at the designated place reserved for adults alone, and smoking is allowed for adults in designated places away from children, under absolutely no circumstance is marijuana or any other illegal drug or drug paraphernalia allowed on campus at any time. Likewise, no fireworks, firearms or other weapons are allowed on campus. Possession of any of the above will result in confiscation and may be grounds for dismissal from the course.
•Just as there are appropriate dress guidelines for the choristers, so also should all staff and adult participants be sure to dress comfortably but with due modesty: no short-shorts, no extremelytight body-revealing tops or bottoms, no exposed cleavage for women or deeply open shirt fronts for men please.
•Daily Morning Prayer, Breakfast, observation of morning Treble rehearsal after ATB rehearsal, afternoon Education sessions, and the after evensong adult gatherings nightly are all elements that are considered optional for adult participants.
