Learning About What Fashion Design Is

Fashion design is the method of combining design and beauty by creating ready-to-wear merchandise. This merchandise includes dresses for every occasion, accessories, shoes, bags, and such.

There are three types of fashion design:

  • Haute couture - this is custom made or made-to-measure

  • Ready-to-wear - ready-made clothing that can be picked off the rack

  • Mass market - apparel produced in volumes and widely distributed

Among these three, the most influential and popular type of fashion design is the mass market category. While the second category, which is ready-to-wear, falls between the high-end haute couture and mass market. Haute couture, on the other hand, is the elite or first class among fashion designs. This involves usage of high class fabric with impeccable attention to the detail of each piece. Of these three, the mass market category offers people decently fitted pieces that are budget-friendly, and 4th of july dresses usually fall under this type.

By learning what fashion design is, individuals can say goodbye to the notion that fashion designers are only involved in the conceptualization of new merchandise. Fashion designers have many tasks on their plate, and these start from conceptualization to distribution. If you really want to become a fashion designer, here are some of the tasks and responsibilities that a fashion designer takes on:

  • Utilizing skills and having the eye for choosing the correct fabric, cut, embellishments, color, etc., which will fit the style of the target market.

The creation of story boards containing new ideas by means of sketches, patches, patterns and what not.

  • Making a toile

This is the rough representation of the design usually made from calico or muslin. The muslin is a favorite when making the toile since it fits well with mannequin forms and has realistic draping and hanging. Once the toile achieves the desired look of the design, the fashion designer will then supervise the creation of the card pattern.

What is a card pattern?

This is the card board pattern of the garment that is divided in different portions, when assembled together it will form the entire garment. The fashion designer needs to check the card pattern to start the final process of garment creation, making the garment itself. During this time, the fashion designer will again check the fabric, buttons, zippers and other elements of the garment to make sure the desired look of the design is achieved.

A trusted and well skilled dress maker usually handles the creation of the garment. Once the garment is finished the fashion designer then chooses to show the item in a collection, make some changes or abandon the design completely.

These are only some of the responsibilities a fashion designer undertakes when creating a garment. The fashion shows, selection of models, creating the arrangement of garment presentation as well as the price of the garment is also a part of the fashion designer's responsibility. When fashion designers own their own line, the obligations usually involve marketing his designs and sales.

After understanding that fashion designing is more than just walking the runway at the end of a fashion show and the passion to pursue the field is still there, then perhaps a future in the industry is indeed imminent.
