The Long Dog Retreat Adoption Application
Thank you so much for contacting The Long Dog Retreat Dachshund Rescue.

Our application is VERY thorough....some feel even invasive. We understand but it is our goal to help all of our dogs find a loving FOREVER home. Most of these dogs have been moved around several times and we want them to be placed in the best situation for THEM.

Before continuing this application, here are a few things that you should know.
1. We RARELY get puppies (dogs under 1 year old)

2. Dachshunds are one of the most difficult dog to potty train. In fact, that is why many of them are surrendered to rescue. They CAN be trained but it is no easy task. If potty accidents are something you cannot deal with then this may not be the correct breed for you.

3. We have some dachshunds that are great with kids/cats but NOT all are. If you see a dog that is CUTE but the biography says "no kids", "no cats"....it is for a reason.

4. All dogs are evaluated by a veterinarian, up to date on shots, neutered/spayed and have a microchip. We CANNOT guarantee health other than what is reported by the vet and foster parent. It is important to know that dachshunds are at high risk for a condition called IVDD. IVDD can come on suddenly, be chronic and cost thousands to treat. We insist that all potential adopters visit www.dodgerslist.com to read and learn about IVDD.

5. Our "rules". We are a very open-minded rescue group. We will NOT turn you away because you do not have a fence, live in an apartment, have children, are on a limited income, etc. We MAY DENY YOUR APPLICATION for a CERTAIN DOG....but NOT from all dogs. Some do just fine in apartments, with kids, on a leash vs in a fenced yard. We will be honest with you about what type of home the dog needs and we just ask that you understand ultimately our goal is to find the best home for the dogs.

6. We do call your references/perform a home visit and run a criminal background check. The background check is a new mandate by the state of Michigan. We are only looking for Animal Cruelty charges.

7. Our Fees
$350.00 - Puppy (8 weeks to 11 months)
$250.00 - 1 year - 9 years
$150.00 - 10+ or Special Needs

  • Generally speaking puppies and young dogs need someone home frequently with them to help them learn social skills, potty training skills and to receive adequate exercise. If your work schedule prohibits this, please consider a slightly older dog that may not have as demanding of needs.
  • Dachshunds are a unique breed and may not be the best option for those who do not have prior experience with them.
  • Example. Our cat fluffy is primarily indoor. Our dog spot is a hunting dog and is primarily outdoors.
  • We require all pets in home to be spayed/neutered however we allow for some exceptions.
  • List the name or tag number from website.
  • Yes No
    Is not good with children?
    Physically handicapped?
    Has been abused?
    Requires ongoing medical treatment?
    Requires more housetraining?
    Requires ongoing obedience training?
    Is a dachshund mix?
Would you consider adopting a bonded pair?
  • Regular vaccines usually include:
    Rabies, Parvo, Distemper and Bordatella.
  • Most breeds of dogs do not have dental issues, however DACHSHUNDS do.
Even if you have never cleaned your current dogs teeth, if you adopt a dachshund you will need to master this skill. It will save you from costly dental bills, tooth loss and stinky dog breath.
  • Heartworm is a devastating disease that is 100% preventable by giving a monthly pill/chew. Some think HW is not a problem in the north but this is a myth. Please get your current dogs tested for and treated for HW.
  • We understand this is a difficult question to answer. Just give us your best guess on how you would handle the situation.
  • If you use more than one vet, please list them all here. We DO call vet references.
If you use a low cost clinic for annual vaccines/HW medication, please list the name of the clinic as well.
  • Please be sure to let your reference know someone will be calling them most likely from an out of state number. We cannot proceed with the application until all references have been checked.
  • Please list the best number to reach your reference.
  • We promise to not spam your reference. We only need the email in the event we are unable to reach by phone.
  • Some great suggestions for references:
Landlords, neighbors, work associates, people who use the same vet, people you have doggy/cat sat for
  • Please choose the closest city to where you live. You may need to refer to a map.
  • (Example - Yes had to turn in German Shepherd to Animal Control because it was too aggressive)
