Argyros GSLC LEED Sign Contest
We know how Girl Scouts LEAD, but how do they LEED?
You can help the Argyros Girl Scout Leadership Center become LEED certified!
Girl Scouts of Orange County is seeking LEED Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and we need every girls' help to Go Green!
What is LEED Certification?
LEED Certification is a points based system that promotes energy and environmentally efficient building techniques to ensure a better tomorrow. The Argyros Girl Scout Leadership Center is built with many ecofriendly features, and we want to install permanent educational signs to point them out!
More details about LEED certification and the features of the Argyros Girl Scout Leadership Center building can be found by clicking on the photo of the Argyros Girl Scout Leadership Center.
How can Girl Scouts help?
We are looking for troops and individual girls to create educational signs about the green features at the Argyros Girl Scout Leadership Center. These signs will help our building earn points toward LEED certification. As Girl Scouts, we are always looking for ways to use our resources wisely and make the world a better place. Educating others today is a great way to show our commitment to a sustainable tomorrow!
Who can participate?
Girl Scouts of all levels are welcome to participate in this contest, with each scouting level aligned to a specific eco-topic to feature in their signs. Multi-level troops should choose one level to enter. Multiple entries can come from one troop, however, each entry must be entered singly. Questions? Contact CustomerCare@GirlScoutsOC.org

DAISIES will create an educational sign about MATERIALS and RESOURCES/RECYCLING:
Some ways your sign might educate about MATERIALS and RESOURCES/RECYCLING:
• How we encourage recycling in the building
• Indicate areas for storage and collection of recyclables near typical uses such as plastic and aluminum recycling in kitchen.
• Show how implementing recycling reduces the amount of materials that go directly into landfills or the ocean.
• A reminder to use materials that can be recycled or re-used when planning an event within the building.
BROWNIES will create an educational sign about WATER EFFICIENCY:
Some ways your sign might educate about WATER EFFICIENCY:
• Show that the building is estimated to reduce potable water use by over 30% above standard buildings of similar type.
• Mention that water use reduction was achieved through low flow fixtures, that reduce the amount of water used to flush a toilet or that comes out of the faucet when turned on.
• Indicate that the fixtures still work as effectively but reduce the burden on city water supply and wastewater systems.
JUNIORS will create an educational sign about SUSTAINABLE SITES
Some ways your sign might educate about SUSTAINABLE SITES:
• Point out Bicycle storage is on the site to securely lock and store bicycles as well as changing facilities for users.
• Promote carpooling to reduce auto traffic
CADETTES will create an educational sign about INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY:
Some ways your sign might educate about INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY:
• According to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency study, the average American spends 90% of their time indoors; therefore the quality of the indoor environment has a significant influence on our well being, productivity and quality of life.
• Because of the mild Southern California climate, this building utilizes operable windows to take advantage of the ocean breezes whenever possible instead of cooling or heating the air through a mechanical system.
• Besides providing daylight and views to the outdoors, the windows provide fresh air, which helps contribute towards the comfort and well being of the occupants.
• We encourage you to open the operable windows, preferably on both sides of a room to get a cross-breeze, whenever possible and also plan ahead for temperature changes that come with natural ventilation.
SENIORS/AMBASSADORS will create an educational sign about ENERGY and ATMOSPHERE:
Some ways your sign might educate about ENERGY and ATMOSPHERE:
• The Girl Scouts of Orange County purchased Green Energy to offset the estimated energy use of the building by 70% over the first two years of operation.
• Several energy saving features were designed and constructed as part of the building.
• By purchasing Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) we can assure that the amount of energy the building consumes is replaced on the electric grid by renewable sources.
• Look for the Green-e® Energy logo to easily identify environmentally friendly superior renewable energy options.
