2018 NTDA SERVICE DEPARTMENT LABOR HOURS SURVEY
2018 National Trailer Dealers Association Service Labor Hours Survey

SURVEYS DUE BY WEDNESDAY, FEB. 28!

IMPORTANT: Complete only the sections of the survey that pertain to trailers you routinely repair or install, or operations that you regularly perform in your shop. Only use the tab button to move from one field to the next. If you hit "RETURN" before the end of the survey, it will submit the form prematurely.

Please complete the address information below so we can send you the survey results. Participants will receive the results free-of-charge. YOUR INDIVIDUAL SURVEY DATA WILL REMAIN STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL. Survey forms must be returned to the NTDA no later than Feb. 28, 2018.

INSTRUCTIONS

Please read ALL instructions before completing the survey.

1. The results of the 2018 NTDA Service Department Labor Hours Survey will be available free-of-charge to those NTDA Dealer members that choose to participate. The Survey Report will also be made available for a fee to non-participating companies.

2. The survey is a time study being conducted of NTDA Dealer members’ trailer repair and installation experiences. It is being conducted by the NTDA as a guide to aid members in establishing baseline installation and repair times for their operations that will ultimately improve their shop productivity and profitability.

3. The survey questionnaire was developed by a Committee of the NTDA Board of Directors. The Committee, composed of Dealer members, spent considerable time and effort revising this survey form in order to provide the most comprehensive and useful data possible.

4. Part I of this survey asks for general information about your shop operations, including number of employees, material handling questions and employee compensation.

5. In some cases, installation or repair times for specific items would not differ significantly for reefers, dry vans and flatbeds (i.e., brake jobs or lighting repairs). In other cases, time experiences may differ depending on the type of trailer (i.e., floors or doors). Part II A includes those items in which time experiences would be “universal” for reefers, dry vans and flatbeds. Part II B includes those items in which time experiences would differ for reefers, dry vans and flatbeds.

6. Parts II A and II B ask for installation and repair times for 22 major categories: Suspensions & Axles; Landing Gear; Brakes/Under Carriage; Brake Controls & Air System; Wheel, Tire & Hub; Bumper; Pintle Hook; Converter Dolly/Draw Bar; Electrical/Lights; Frame; Paint; Side Assembly; Rear Door Frame; Door & Hardware; Roof Assembly & Upper Section; Floors; Refrigeration; and Liftgates.

7. *****IMPORTANT!!!******
Leave blank any sections that include items with which you do not have significant experience. Do not include handling time from place of storage to the installation or assembly bay. Estimate hours based on all aspects of repairs needed by the mechanic (i.e., include set up of repair, completion of the operation and/or tear down). Do not include time to obtain parts for repairs or bringing the trailer into the bay. Do not include time to upload incoming shipments as it is assumed that will be factored into your incoming freight cost.

The NTDA understands that times may vary depending on the brand involved in certain installations. Please list the average installation time for the brand you use most often. Only aggregate data will be published.

8. Fill in time (hours) that you charge a customer (“Book Rate”) to install the specified pieces of equipment or to perform the alterations indicated. Record to the nearest tenth of an hour (i.e., for 2 hours and 45 minutes, record 2.8). Do not include posted rates that you charge your customers.

9. Call NTDA President Gwen Brown at 1-800-800-4552, or e-mail gwen@ntda.org, with questions or recommendations to improve the survey in the future.
