Rules and Guidelines

GENERAL RULES
1. Filmmakers may submit up to 2 films per festival.
2. All films must have been completed after September 1, 2009.
3. Repeat submissions will not be accepted without significant changes to the product.
4. The West Virginia Filmmakers Guild reserves the right to categorize films in additional categories at no additional charge to the filmmaker

Feature Films:
1. A Feature Film is defined as any film exceeding 55 minutes.
2. Filmmakers may submit no more than one feature per festival.
3. Awards for Narrative Feature and Documentary Feature will be awarded to the credited director for the project.

Shorts:
Narrative short: A narrative short is categorized as any fiction video, or film over 2 minutes in length and under 30 minutes.

Student Films:
1. A Student Film shall be defined as:
a. A film or video directed, or produced by student of high school, or college age currently enrolled in a West Virginia educational institution
b. a film or video produced by a group of students or an educator in conjunction with a recognized educational project.
c. a film or video produced in conjunction with any state recognized educational nonprofits.
2. Educators may submit up to three (3) films on behalf of their filmmakers.

Experimental/Music Video/Animation:
1. This category is open to all films and videos:
a. in the genre and aesthetic of experimental, non-narrative or avant-garde filmmaking.
b. consisting of drawn digitally rendered, or stop motion animated images.
c. Any non-narrative short form films consisting of images set to music
2. Filmmakers submitting music videos must have permission of both the featured musical artists and the current rights holder to the featured composition. No music videos will be accepted without proof of permission.

Awards will be decided by a jury of filmmaker's from West Virginia and throughout the United States.

Payment

Submission Fees are based on the following calendar of deadlines:

Features (50 min. and above)
$30 – Regular Deadline (postmarked by August 1) ($25 for WVFG Members)

Shorts (under 50 min.)
$23 – Regular Deadline (postmarked by Aug 1) ($20 for WVFG Members)
$25 – Extended Deadline (August 15) (23$ for WVFG Members)

Student
$10 – Regular Deadline (postmarked by August 1)
$15 – Extended Deadline (postmarked by August 15)

Experimental/Animation/Music Video
$20 – Regular Deadline (postmarked by August 1) ($15 for WVFG Members)
$30 – Extended Deadline (postmarked by August 15)($20 for WVFG Members)

TERMS AND CONDITIONS
RELEASE AGREEMENT
Please read the following terms and conditions in connection with your film entry and related material to the West Virginia Filmmakers Festival(WVFF)
If acceptable, please complete the entry form in the bottom margin of the submission form.

1. As the Director/Producer or the Authorized Person to submit the Film (film material) etc. I/we have submitted our Film Work to the WVFF I/we warrant as the sole and exclusive owner(s) of all legal right and title thereto and have absolute authority to submit the enclosed material to West Virginia Filmmakers Festival.

2. I/we will indemnify and hold harmless WVFF its judges, sponsors, partners, individually and collectively, from and against all claims, demands, losses, damages, costs, liabilities and expenses including legal expenses arising out of or in connection with any and all claims, or third party claims based on material submitted to the West Virginia Filmmakers Festival.

3. I/we understand that the submission of the film or film materials alone doesn't grantee that the film will be screened at West Virginia Filmmakers Festival. The WVFF has the rights to decide the finalists & the winners. Selected filmmakers will permit the WVFF to screen their film, use the title of their submitted work, log-line, their name, contact information, publicity stills, film footage and likeness, in ancillary screenings and publicity & promotional efforts.

4. I/We understand and agree that once your film is selected for screening, I forfeit my right to remove my film from the schedule.

5. West Virginia Filmmakers Festival may transfer the submitted screener to a required media format for screening, if needed, and that media may be used for WVFF for promotional purposes.

6. By submitting this work, I accept that I have in good faith complied with all copyright, trademark, or servicemark laws and have acquired all necessary rights regarding any copyrighted music, images, or other intellectual property present in my film.
