As Episcopalians we are committed to proportionate giving for several reasons. When we turn to our scriptures, we find the “tithe” (10%) as one reminder that God lays claim on all dimensions of our lives, including our money. When we “count” our blessings, we acknowledge that while we are all at different places financially, we are nonetheless equally responsible to be good stewards of that which we have been given. If God is the Source of 100%, is the tithe really that much?
Making a pledge based on proportionate giving causes us to stop, take stock, and make an intentional commitment — even a faith commitment. Proportionate giving also reminds us that from God’s perspective, our ‘holdings’ are a trust, not a possession. The final decision, of course, is between you and God. Prayerfully consider your pledge.
