"I used to work for the third largest health insurance provider in the US as a supervisor for the last seven years. Part of my job is talking to members (patient), providers, and medical directors to resolve issues or concerns related to case filing and case denials. In many instances, I must call providers office and get patient’s information, medical services needed, and prior medical services performed in order to make sure that we are not missing any information which may cause a denial.
In some occasion, I also mediate between providers and our medical directors for medical case or issues they don’t agree with by getting all needed information to find a resolution to the case at hand. Many times, during this period I get numerous commendations from our member (patient) and providers because I was able to help them expedite their request or overturn a denial.
There was one time I received an escalated call from a mother requesting for an approval for her daughter’s procedure for the last two weeks and yet she was only advised to keep waiting. In addition to the long wait time she was transferred to several department and yet was unable to get any help. What I did was I ask her to attend to her daughter who is currently sick and work on her case. I reached out for the department responsible for the approval and I was able to do that the same day. I called the member as well as the provider (facility) and gave the approval for them to perform the medical service the child need. The mother was delighted and felt relieved because finally after two weeks of waiting in vain someone was able to help her."
