There are huge benefits to participating in our guardian program. Along with the benefits come the difficult parts. Obviously the most difficult portion is sharing the dog. When a girl comes into season they come back and visit us usually for about a week. The girls stay with their guardian family for the majority of their pregnancy. One week prior to their scheduled whelp date the girls come home. The stay with us for the whelping and puppy raising portion. They usually return home when the puppies are 7-8 weeks of age. This program is not for everyone. But the families that participate learn a lot about the canine reproductive system (more than you ever thought you wanted to know) :-) And you can participate in puppy socialization if you would like. Most of our families come to visit their girls 2-4 times a month once the babies are here. It's good for our girls to know that they still have a family out there and that you want to be a part of this as well. These girls are SO proud of what they've just done. It's amazing to watch this process!

Are you going to be okay with your girl being gone for 8-9 weeks at a time? This is a VERY real question and it's the most difficult part of being a guardian family.

Are you looking to do any of the following activities with your new addition? PLEASE let me know if you have kids that are interested in doing Junior conformation handling with the IABCA and UKC or 4-H obedience and or agility. Or if you have intentions of having your dog trained as a service dog please include this information. It is very helpful in determining which puppy is the best fit for your situation.
