Our Code of Conduct

Respect: To be respectful of Nicaraguan culture, and those of other volunteers. Treat all individuals with a sense of dignity, respect, and worth. Make a personal commitment to be nonjudgmental about cultural differences, and try to maintain an open mind, and a positive attitude.

Responsibility: Be dependable, recognizing the commitment and responsibility to your volunteer assignment.

Working Hours: Kindergarten assistants and grade 1 assistants/tutors work from 7:30 - 12:00 noon. The English teams work with the higher grades, 4, 5 and 6 who attend school in the afternoons, so hours are 12:30 - 4:30. Volunteers in our learning centers work either morning or afternoon shifts (both 4-5 hours). Although evenings are free, please reserve night-life for the weekend. It is particularly important not to turn up suffering the after effects of a big night. Working with the children is demanding so requires a high level of energy and alertness.

Dress: In the schools and learning centers, a La Esperanza Granada t-shirt with long shorts, skirt or trousers. Closed footwear is advised.

Meetings: There is a volunteer meeting each Tuesday at 5:00 pm (about 40 minutes). Attendance is required.

Housing (if you choose to stay in our volunteer housing): No drugs, no pets, no overnight visitors, smoking in open areas only, consideration for all others in the house, do your own dishes, and clean up your own mess.

Costs: $20 administration fee to be paid in cash at orientation. Contribution to rent (for volunteer housing) is to be paid in full, or for at least four weeks, in cash at orientation. T-shirts are to be paid for in cash at orientation – minimum two (US$5.00 each).
