Dr. Stilwell: Animal Welfare & Profitable Farming
With intensive animal production developing worldwide, concerns regarding sustainability, animal welfare and environmental impact have increased. Consumers are now more informed, judicious and sensitive and demand safe, natural, high quality, animal and environment friendly food at any cost… but only if at a low cost. Is this feasible? We aim to demonstrate in our talk that it is possible to increase animal performance while ensuring its welfare.
In other words, three intertwined reasons should back the promotion of farm animal welfare by humans: ethical, health and also economic reasons.

George Stilwell was a practitioner for 15 years working mainly with farm animals. Since 2001 he has been lecturing “Farm Animal Clinics” and “Deontology and Bioethics”. He is also a diplomate of the European College of Bovine Health Management. His PhD was on evaluation and management of pain in cattle after routine procedures.
