Young Adult Services Symposium Student Stipend
  • About the Student Stipend:

    YALSA’s Young Adult Services Symposium Student Stipend will enable one qualified recipient to attend the symposium, which will be held in Salt Lake City, UT, November 2-4, 2018

    One stipend up to $1,000 will be awarded to a student enrolled in an ALA Accredited MLS program with a focus on serving young adults in a library setting. Applicant must be a student during the dates of the YA Services Symposium, Nov. 2 - 4, 2018.

    Applications must be submitted online by June 1, 2018.

    Winners will be announced the last week of July.

  • Application Guidelines:

    1. All applications must be submitted electronically using this official application form.
    2. All applicants must be current, personal members of YALSA at the time of application.
    3. You may upload your supporting statement below unless the statement will be sent directly from your professor. Please make sure document is named appropriately, last name of the applicant, underscore, and name of document. IE. Gilbert_supportingstatement.doc
    4. Word document or PDFs will be accepted.
    5. Supporting statements can be submitted as an attachment to YALSA at noconnor@ala.org.
    6. Applications are due no later than June 1, 2018.
  • Requirements for Applicants:

    • YALSA personal membership (student membership is acceptable)
    • Enrollment in an ALA Accredited MLS program
    • Previous recipients not eligible
    • Incomplete submissions will not be considered
  • Criteria for Selection:

    -Candidate’s commitment to young adult library services, as envisioned in YALSA's report, The Future of Library Services for and with Teens: a Call to Action
    -Candidate’s desired learning outcomes for attending the symposium
    -Candidate’s financial and professional development needs
    -Strength of supporting statement
    -Enrollment in an ALA Accredited MLS program (full or part time)

  • Supporting Statement Information

    Have a library science faculty member who is familiar with your work and professional goals comment on your qualifications and how attendance at the Young Adult Services Symposium will benefit your future career. The supporting statement can either be submitted below with this application or sent separately. The supporting statement must be emailed to noconnor@ala.org no later than midnight, June 1, 2016. Be sure your name and “supporting statement” appear in the subject line.
  • 7. Statement of Understanding

    I understand that the up to $1,000 awarded is only for conference expenses (registration fees, travel, housing, meal per diem) and in order to receive my full award, I must provide original receipts to the YALSA Office. If selected, I agree to submit either a blog post about what I gained from the conference or a YALSA Academy video featuring one new thing I learned from the conference by Jan. 1, 2019. I further understand that if I win the stipend and for some reason cannot attend the conference that I must notify the YALSA Office by Aug. 15, 2018 and will forfeit the award. I am also aware that if I win this stipend I am not eligible to apply in future years.
