  • Dear USA BMX athlete/parent,

My name is Mike McKenney and I will be the athletic trainer(s) for Team USA at the UCI BMX World Championships in Baku.

Please let me briefly state my role as licensed athletic trainer:
    1. Provide any pre-race treatments to athletes including, but not limited to: Stretching, Massage, Manual Therapy, etc…Whatever will help our athletes perform at their highest level.
    2. Recognize, manage, and treat athletic injuries in conjunction with the UCI track medical team. What this means is that we will be there to support any injured athlete and provide information relevant parties (e.g. parents of minor athletes).
    3. Assist athletes with any general medical conditions: Asthma, Heat Illness, etc…

What this means is that if you or your child suffer an injury while participating in a race we are there to help. I will have communication with USA BMX staff and we will work collaboratively to ensure that each athlete has the safest and best possible experience. We will be located near the track to assist with race injuries and in the team area to provide treatments before, during, and after racing.

A main topic of discussion is the prevalence of concussions in sport and appropriate management of these injuries. Please read the information below regarding this topic.
    Concussion Management:

A concussion is a disturbance in brain function that occurs following either a blow to the head or as a result of the violent shaking of the head. Because of the high incidence of injury we feel it is necessary to educate parents on the signs/symptoms and management strategies for concussions. Please take time to familiarize yourself with these signs and symptoms as you may be the first person to recognize your son has suffered a concussion. It is not uncommon for an injury occurring to your child to go unreported to the coach or athletic trainer. Because of this, and because of the personal insight you have with your child, it is vital for you to be an active participant in early recognition of injury. If you or a coach suspects that your child has suffered a concussion please contact Mike or one of the onsite athletic trainers to confirm your suspicion and develop an appropriate evaluation and treatment strategy. If you are unable to reach one of us, or if your child exhibits signs of an increasing headache, nausea/vomiting, or deteriorating level of consciousness, please go to the nearest emergency room for proper care.

We look forward to meeting more of you in the future and welcome any comments or concerns that you may have.

Please feel free to let us know any medical concerns you have regarding yourself or your child by filling out this form. Additionally you may meet and speak with us during jersey pickup with any questions you have regarding the health of yourself or your child in regards to their safe participation in the sport of BMX!
