Martin Luther King Oratorical Contest 2017
Theme: "Share Your Light, Spread Your Love"

Prompt: In his speech, "Strength to Love," Martin Luther King Jr. wrote, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." How do you interpret MLK's statement? How can it connect to Elon University, and how can you apply it in the context of today's society?

Contest Information:
- All Elon University students are eligible to compete
-Original speeches, spoken word, or other forms of artistry are welcome
-Time limit: 7 minutes
-All contestants must register
-Applications are due by Friday, January 6, 2017
-Preliminary rounds will take place on Wednesday, January 11 if necessary.
-Final round of the Oratorical Contest will be captured on film for learning on demand. All contestants must sign video release form.

Scoring Rubric
Contestants will receive scores from 1-10points in the following:
-Introduction
-Development of Theme
-Elaboration of main points
-Closing
-Originality
-Pitch/Volume
-Tempo/fluency
-Appropriate Gestures
-Pronunciation/Enunciation
-Length of Time

Winners will receive prizes
1st place prize: $200.00
2nd place prize: $150.00
3rd place prize: $100.00
