"I was working as a receptionist onboard a cruise vessel. Mainly dealing with customer service, answering general questions, and resolving complaints or issues.
As a receptionist, we make sure that every guest gets to experience the high standards of our ship. For example, a guest complaint was lodged at the desk. We try to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Some general complaints such as loud neighbors, toilet not working and food complaints. After such reported incidents, we make sure that its resolve within the 24 hour period.
That doesn't stop there, after let's say a toilet was fixed by our onboard plumbers. We go for the extra touch by giving them a ring to check if everything was fine or if it is working to their satisfaction. Sometimes, if the issue goes a bit further, we offer some gestures from our side. Let's say a bottle of wine as an apology for their disturbed sleep.
Also, the receptionist doesn't just stand at the front desk. We have some side duties as well which, you could be a telephone operator for the whole month. Basically, you are in charge of the telephone answering medical calls, guest issues, and general information for the entire ship. As a telephone operator(we call it switchboard onboard the vessel) you are in charge of the entire office's supplies, you get to order stuff from the provisions such as pens, papers, ink for the printer, and so on.
This was my first and only job before getting laid off due to covid-19, I must say that the thing that I enjoyed is earning while traveling the world for free.
This experience has molded me into a better person and I got to practice my English both written and oral as this is the general language onboard. "
