Edmund Kuempel Public Service Scholarship Program

The Texas Legislative Conference (herein referenced to as “The Conference”) established in 2011 the Edmund Kuempel Public Service Scholarship Program to award a scholarship to two area high school seniors each year.

The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide financial assistance to high school seniors who are interested in pursuing studies in government and/or public service. Scholarships can be applied toward tuition, fees, books and/or housing.

This is a one-time $1,000 scholarship. Recipients must plan to attend a college, university or trade school in Texas; a minimum of 12 hours must be taken in the semester. Checks will be made payable to the scholarship recipient.

All applications for the Edmund Kuempel Scholarship Program must be received no later than March 21, 2021. Applications received after March 21, 2021 will not be accepted.

ELIGIBILITY GUIDELINES
The Conference’s goal is to encourage and assist students to fulfill their educational endeavors in the field of government and/or public service (policeman, fireman, lawyer, teacher, military, etc.). The following guidelines will be used to determine eligibility and to evaluate applications:

1. Any senior attending Canyon High School, New Braunfels High School, Navarro High School, or Seguin High School and who has taken government classes is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

2.The student must plan to attend a college, university or trade school in Texas and concentrate in government and/or public service to include but not limited to Political Science, Public Administration, Legal Studies, Law Enforcement, Military Service, Firefighter Training, Education, Non-profit Management, and Public Safety.

3. The student must have an overall “B” average or above.

1. Grades, Course Work and Test Scores
The applicant must have an overall “B” average and have pursued a curriculum that indicates a potential for success in the course work to be pursued. *

2. Personal Incentive, Volunteerism and Extracurricular Activities
The student should list his/her extracurricular school activities, community involvement, and work experience. *
3. Personal Statement – The statement should describe the student’s background, future plans, career goals, and why he/she would like to be considered for the scholarship award. *
The personal statement plays a critical role in helping the screening committee select finalists for the selection process. We encourage the applicant to spend on adequate amount of time and effort preparing their statements.
4. Educational Concentration
Applicants must plan to attend a college, university or trade school in Texas and concentrate in the field of public service; i.e., law, education, military, public safety, public administration, political science, government, etc.

5. Additional Documents

If selected as a recipient of this scholarship, your photo will be included in presentation during the program. Please upload a recent photo.

7. Guests
If selected as a recipient, you will accept the scholarship at the Texas Legislative Conference on May 7, 2021 at 8:30 a.m. at the McKenna Events Center. Your parents/guardians may attend with you as your guests. What are the names of your guests?
