Purpose of the Award
The Woman of the Year (WOY) Award recognizes one extraordinary woman who has made significant contributions to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community through leadership and service. The winner of the award is acknowledged by the Branch at the annual Woman of the Year Coronation ceremony. The winner later represents the Branch in the North Carolina NAACP statewide Woman of the Year competition. The purpose of the statewide competition is to assist the North Carolina NAACP with critical financial support to carry out the work of the NAACP.
Eligibility
A candidate must satisfy the below in order to be nominated:
- Reside or work in either Chapel Hill or Carrboro, NC.
- Hold membership with the NAACP.
- Be comfortable with competing at the state level for NAACP Woman of the Year. At this level, one would need to pursue fundraising activities.
Criteria
The WOY Award Committee uses the following criteria to evaluate applicants:
- Community Involvement: Demonstrated a commitment to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro community through a track record of service and community support that champions the interests and needs of women, children, and people of color; efforts have enhanced the lives of local citizens.
- Contributions to Women of Color: Demonstrated, consistent leadership as a role model and mentor for women of color; efforts have made a significant contribution that helped break barriers and/or create opportunities.
