Some everyday products, like aerosol spray starch, can be dangerous when transported on the aircraft in carry-on and/or checked baggage. Changes in temperature or pressure can cause some items to leak, generate toxic fumes or start a fire. Federal law forbids the carriage of hazardous materials aboard aircraft in your luggage or on your person. A violation can result in 5 years' imprisonment and penalties of $250,000 or more (49 U.S.C. 5124). Hazardous materials include explosives, compressed gases, flammable liquids and solids, oxidizers, poisons, corrosives and radioactive materials. Examples: Paints, lighter fluid, fireworks, tear gases, oxygen bottles and radio-pharmaceuticals.

There are special exceptions for small quantities (up to 70 ounces total) of medicinal and toilet articles carried in your luggage and certain materials carried on your person.

Certain items are required to be carried with you onboard the aircraft. For example, spare lithium batteries for portable electronic devices and cigarette lighters must be removed from checked or gate-checked baggage and carried onboard the aircraft.

Traveling with medical oxygen, liquid oxygen, mobility aids and other assistive devices may require airline pre-approval or be restricted from carriage entirely. Passengers requiring these items should contact the airline operator for information on use of such devices.
