Ai Ling Lee was born in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1960. Taipei, a long-time major East Asian hub, provided Lee with a rich cultural heritage, though the city-state faced strife in the 1960s as it moved toward special municipality status in 1967 and remained under martial law for an extended period.

During Ai Ling Lee's first decade, the bustling capital city surpassed one million people, a figure it maintains to this day. Despite the region's tensions, there was an opportunity for education, which students took advantage of in order to build a better life both at home and abroad.
