Deputy Communications Director
Seeking a motivated, diligent, experienced communications professional and writer to serve as deputy communications director, overseeing interactions with local and national media on behalf of the governor’s office, among other duties.

Working closely with and at the direction of the communications director, this individual will field media requests, prepare comprehensive and substantive responses over the phone and by email, and establish positive working relationships with beat reporters, ensuring coverage is accurate and fair.

Duties also include general policy advisement: The writing of position papers, the formulation and execution of a message calendar, proactive outreach to advocacy organizations. Other duties may include press conference scheduling and management, press release distribution and management, appearances in front of reporters, assistance in drafting preparatory talking points for the governor and other governor’s office officials and assisting the communications director on overall messaging.

Preferences include experience working in or with media, a familiarity with New Mexico politics and governance, and a willingness to go above and beyond in directly accommodating reporters as a means of improving the general relationship between the governor’s office and media. Bilingual preferred, not essential.
