Course Details:
RADAR instruments and the people who operate them are constantly being challenged in court. The lack of proper operator training has been at the root of almost all the successful challenges to the RADAR. Scientific tests have consistently shown that the RADAR instruments used in traffic enforcement are reliable tools, especially when properly installed and operated by a skilled and knowledgeable operator. This course will instruct the student on the basic operational procedures for Doppler Units and proper courtroom testimony for RADAR use.
Lidar (light detection and ranging) has become a popular tool with officers for speed enforcement, especially in congested traffic conditions. Lidar allows for very specific target acquisition when attempting to determine the speed of a particular vehicle on a crowded roadway. This course will improve your knowledge of both Radar and Laser speed measuring devices. You will learn the different scientific principles behind these devices and their proper applications. Additional topics will include: operational considerations, case law and administrative rules, preparations for court presentation, time, distance, and speed measurement, and scientific principles of Radar and Laser. It is highly recommended radar operators take this course at least once every two-three years as a basic and/or refresher course.
Students should bring a Radar and Lidar unit that they will be using while on duty with their respective agency. Upon completion of this course, students will receive twenty four hours of TCLEOSE credit.
