Council Members: Neighborhood historic district designation should mean new construction being subject to “heightened” review to ensure its compatibility with its surrounding historic neighborhood. Such review is one of the keys to keeping historic neighborhoods special! While designing a new home to fit within a historic neighborhood should not be a particularly difficult task, it seems to have become the case for the property at 736 18th Ave. NE. The proposed out-sized, incompatibly designed new home would dominate the street and threaten the historic integrity of the district. Although presenting a primary facade to the street, the orientation, flow and directional character of the structure is to the side which is incompatible with the block’s historic orientation. I urge you to deny the COA. Your decision is not just important to the 18th Ave. NE Historic District but it is also important to all of our local historic districts. This case will set the precedent for the integrity of historic district new construction review
