Your name gives you identity in this world. It tells others who you are. At Baptism, you were called by Christ with the name your parents chose for you.
During the Celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, you will be anointed by the Bishop with the Oil of Chrism, the same oil used at your Baptism and you will give him your name. You may choose your own Baptismal name to signify your acceptance of your Baptismal call and the continuation of this call through Confirmation. Or, you may choose a new name as a sign of you new role in the Church.
The tradition of taking a new name to indicate a new role in life can be traced back to the Bible. When Abraham, our father in faith, was called by God his name was changed from Abram ("father of many") to Abraham ("father of many nations"). The apostle Simon's name was changed to Peter ("rock") since he was the rock of foundation of Christ's Church. Cardianl Jorge Mario Bergoglio took the name Francis when he became Pope to indicate he would our church following the traditions of St. Francis.
If you choose a new name at Confirmation it will not replace your Baptismal name but be added to it. YOUR CHOICE MUST BE FOR THE RIGHT REASON.
To begin, you can research saint's names on the internet. Read their stories and see what you have in common, look up a patron saint for your birthday or future goal in life.
Whether you take a new Confirmation name or use your Baptismal name, give the name you are choosing and below explain in detail why you chosen this name.
