Read page 162-165 in the Catholic Faith Handbook
One of the images Jesus uses for the Kingdom of Heaven in Scripture is a Great Feast/Wedding Banquet. What can this image tell us about Heaven? What other connections to our Catholic faith can you make from this?
*
Read the words St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians during the early years of the Church after Jesus' Ascension in I Corinthians 15:36-58 either in a Bible at home or online here: https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1corinthians/15
While spreading the faith and people becoming new believers at the time, there was great persecution and many apostles and new Christians were being killed, yet they were still converting and evangelizing. This persecution still happens today in parts of the world.
In this Scripture, written while in prison, Paul wanted to encourage and remind everyone about an essential truth of our faith - the resurrection of the body. As Catholics we say we believe this at every Mass during the Creed.
What thoughts, feelings, and/or questions do you have about the resurrection of the body after reflecting on these verses?
*
People often talk about Purgatory as someplace you "go." After reading pg 164-165, do you think Purgatory is a place or a process? Please explain your answer.
*
The bottom of page 159 and top of page 160 summarizes what the Gospel of John outlines as how to inherit the gift of eternal life. What does one have to do?
*
Please watch this video from a few years ago of a young boy asking Pope Francis if his atheist father is in Heaven.
https://youtu.be/dP6cBMSEg6c
How does Pope Francis' answer contrast the Scriptures above?
Do you think that means that Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, doesn't believe in the Scripture?
Do you think it means he is telling us it doesn't really matter if you believe in God in the end?
How do you think Jesus would have answered this little boy?
Is it possible to hold both answers as true in the context of our faith?
